Georgetown, SC– Founded in 1990 as a Crisis Center on Myrtle Beach’s iconic boardwalk, Teen Challenge of South Carolina has been a beacon of hope for men struggling with addiction for over three decades. Under the leadership of Rev. Wayne Powell, countless individuals have found freedom from addiction and embraced a life of purpose.
Shortly after Sandhills Adult & Teen Challenge was founded by Sal DiBianca in 1987, he and Rev. Powell soon found themselves working together to operate the South Carolina program out of a unique location: the top floor of the Freaky Tiki nightclub. Despite the unconventional setting, Rev. Powell’s unwavering dedication to helping others transformed the space into a place of healing and recovery.
In 2002, Teen Challenge of South Carolina purchased a 44-acre property along Highway 701 in Georgetown, South Carolina. While construction of the permanent campus was underway, staff operated out of a construction trailer on the property. Through the generous support of donors, churches, and businesses, three new buildings were eventually erected, creating a beautiful campus capable of housing over 20 students and 5 staff members.
As Rev. Wayne Powell approaches his 70th birthday, he has been seeking a suitable successor to carry on the legacy of Teen Challenge of South Carolina. This led to a connection with Russ Cambria, CEO & Executive Director of Sandhills Adult & Teen Challenge, at the 2024 Adult & Teen Challenge National Conference. Recognizing the shared mission and geographic proximity of the two organizations, both leaders along with Brian Decker, CFO, and Steve Coleman, COO, saw an opportunity to collaborate more closely. A strategic partnership was formed, which will allow Teen Challenge of South Carolina to focus on its core mission of providing initial recovery support, while Sandhills ATC will offer advanced training and rehabilitation programs. This collaboration ensures the continued growth and impact of Teen Challenge in South Carolina.
Following the Dallas meeting, Sandhills ATC and Teen Challenge of South Carolina embarked on a strategic partnership that has culminated in a formal merger. On November 18, 2024, the board of directors approved the appointment of Russ Cambria as the new CEO/Executive Director and adopted the board of Sandhills Adult & Teen Challenge.
Rev. Wayne Powell, the founder of Teen Challenge of South Carolina, will continue to be involved in the organization as a board member and fundraising advocate. While the Powell family remains committed to the organization’s mission, Rev. Powell is excited to entrust the day-to-day operations to a new leader who will guide the ministry into the future. He also looks forward to spending more time on his passions, including hunting and fishing.
Cambria and Powell are in the process of identifying a long-term Center Director and plan to have someone in place early in the New Year.
